12 ﹁ The Twelve Tribes Within is the twelfth of the ninety-five untyings of the Order of the Universe, and it demands the first full census this ascent has ever asked for: not one more integration, but the complete counting of the self as a whole nation of inner parts. The knot of this degree is Self-Unawareness — the faceless figure before an empty mirror, ruled hour to hour by whichever tribe seizes the throne because none has ever been named. The untying is Identity: the self fully seen, its nine ordinary motive-sets and three transcendent faculties — the Order's own nine sen]wt, three beyond — gathered at last around one knowing center.

The Mythological — the twelve tribes of Israel encamped four to a side around the tabernacle, with Levi withdrawn to its center; the twelve Olympians seated at Hestia's hearth; the twelve labors that alone opened Olympus to Heracles; the twelve apostles and the election of Matthias to keep the circle unbroken; the Round Table's twelve knights and the Siege Perilous left empty for the one who could complete them; and the twelve Imams of Shi'a tradition, culminating in the hidden, awaited Mahdi.

The Spiritual — the Delphic gnothi seauton and Socrates' verdict that the unexamined life is not worth living; the Upanishadic atman and tat tvam asi; the Sufi hadith that to know oneself is to know one's Lord; the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas's identification of self-knowledge with salvation; and the convergent modern testimony of the birth chart's whole resident zodiac, Jung's twelve archetypes, Assagioli's sub-personalities, and Internal Family Systems' parts and Self — independent surveys that all arrive at the same finding, that the "I" is a parliament, not a point.

The Numerological — twelve as three multiplied by four, the spiritual triad worked through the material square; the highly composite number, richer in divisors than any smaller; the zodiac's twelve signs as four elements crossed by three modalities; the Hanged Man's inverted vantage; the geometric kissing number of twelve spheres closing perfectly around a thirteenth — together with the Order's own reading, where twelve is sos and the count is sixteenfold.

The Developmental — the Age of Twelve: Piaget's formal operational thought turned for the first time upon the self, Cooley's looking-glass self entered deliberately, Erikson's identity-versus-role-confusion opening its moratorium, Elkind's imaginary audience and personal fable, and Marcia's four identity statuses — the seed-stage in which a child first asks who she is apart from what she has been told, and the knot of Self-Unawareness first tied, in the child forbidden to look or the child who looked and foreclosed too soon.

The Operative — self-awareness as literal census-taking: the disciplined observation of one's own recurring tribes, each with its voice, its trigger, its want and its fear; the danger of mistaking the map — a sun sign, a diagnosis, a type — for the territory; the grammatical shift from I am angry to a part of me is angry, in which the knowing center first appears; and a twelve-day practice of census and installation for the Self-band initiate.
