16 ﹁ The Socion
the Rabble and the Achievement of the Socion

The Fifteenth Untying taught you to act rightly. The Sixteenth asks a harder question of the same rightness: among all who also act rightly, where do you belong?
16 ﹁ The Socion is the sixteenth of the ninety-five untyings of the Order of the Universe, and it exposes the specific danger waiting even for a rightly-acting self: dissolving, correct in every isolated deed, into a faceless mass that has never found its own type. The knot of this degree is the Rabble — undifferentiated reactivity mistaken for belonging, a self that has never been asked, and has never asked itself, what distinguishes it from the crowd it stands in. The untying is the Socion: each member known by its own type, in right function and right relation within a whole that needs it precisely because no other member can supply what it supplies.
This is a full monograph of sixty-four pages with twelve engraved plates, moving through the number sixteen on every level the Order recognizes:
The Mythological — the sixteen great elders drawn out of Buddhism's once-anonymous sangha, each given his own name, dwelling, and charge; the Tantric Goddess Shodashi, "the sixteen-fold one," and her sixteen named Nityas; the Tower of Babel's one uniform tongue struck down so that differentiated peoples might rise from the rubble; the Tarot's Tower, its false and undivided height brought low; the sixteen court figures of the working deck's four suits and four ranks; and the many-headed Hydra set against Rome's fable of the belly and the members.
The Spiritual — Paul's teaching to a fractured Corinth on the one Body with many members, none permitted to say to another I have no need of you; vocation as a summons rather than a career, from the Gita's own dharma to the Hasidic tale of Rabbi Zusya; Jung's Psychological Types and its modern descendant, Aušra Augustinavičiūtė's socionics, which names the completed pattern of sixteen types the Socion outright; and the duality between complementary types, a whisper becoming an ally in another member of the same body.
The Numerological — sixteen reached twice over, by squaring four and by doubling a unit four times, two independent roads converging on one figure; the magic square of four rows and columns, a foundation subdivided into sixteen distinct and necessary cells; the proper divisors of sixteen summing to fifteen, one short — the unifying increment none of the parts alone supplies; the digit-root return to seven, Purpose made social — together with the Order's own reading, where sixteen is huijen, 0x10, the Order's own native base completed.
The Developmental — the Age of Sixteen: Bowen's differentiation of self against fusion with the group; Dunphy's crowd stages and Coleman's "adolescent society" with its own arbitrary status economy; Tajfel and Turner's social identity theory and Sherif's Robbers Cave; the crest of peer conformity that Berndt documents; Cillessen and Rose's distinction between perceived and sociometric popularity; Super's crystallization, the coach or teacher whose naming of a particular gift becomes a first proof of being not interchangeable; and the knot tied in the youth swallowed whole by the crowd, or refused a place in every one she tried.
The Operative — the discipline of leaving rabble-consciousness for Socion-consciousness, deliberately and repeatedly; discerning a true function from its two counterfeits, the borrowed type and the refused type; the dismantling, stone by chosen stone, of one's own false tower of borrowed approval; the complementary relation that completes what one type cannot supply alone; and a three-part practice of discernment, confession, and one visible act of service performed from one's actual function.
