The Order does not teach the timid to be brave. It teaches everyone to read the price.

5 ﹁  Risk and Venture is the fifth of the ninety-five untyings of the Order of the Universe, and it corrects the most common misunderstanding in the whole ascent. The knot of this degree is not risk. In its fuller form the knot is High-Risk, Low-Reward — the life that pays enormously for very little and calls it fate; that will risk its peace to win an argument and its years on a hope it has never once examined, while refusing the single uncomfortable afternoon that could return a great deal. The untying is Low-Risk, High-Reward: not caution, not daring — correct pricing.

The Mythological — the pentagram drawn in a single unbroken line, the Pythagorean sign of health whose crossings conceal the golden section; Venus, whose eight-year dance traces a five-petalled rose across the sky, tracked by Inanna's priests and the Maya alike as a cosmology of descent and return; the five wounds as the price of a crossing; the Chinese wuxing, in which nothing is stable and the wisdom is knowing which turn comes next; ākāśa, the subtle fifth; and the hand of five fingers, the organ that changes the world by reaching.

The Philosophical — Pascal's wager treated honestly, objections and all, because what survives them is the structure: when outcomes are wildly unequal, probability is not the only thing that matters. Fortuna and virtus; Boethius's wheel and Machiavelli's river, which can be diked in fair weather but not in flood; the Stoic division of what is and is not up to us, read as a doctrine of pricing rather than resignation; and the five gates through which all knowledge must enter.

The Numerological — five as freedom, motion, sensation — and its shadow: dissipation, novelty mistaken for living. The exquisite fact that regular pentagons cannot tile a plane: five is the number that cannot settle, which is why it wanders. The Hierophant of the fifth trump and his instructive shadow — the man so committed to the safe path that he has stopped weighing it, and has thereby taken on a lifetime of unpriced risk. In the Order's tongue five is reixv, and in the sixteenfold count it is the first number that will not divide the base cleanly: the first that must be ventured rather than allotted.

The Developmental — the Age of Five: the year the child leaves. Chosen friendship, the first fair loss, risky play and the finding that children permitted graduated risk grow less anxious rather than more. The knot is tied here in one of two ways — in the child whose every venture met alarm, or in the child pushed out with no base to return to. One grows up paying too much for safety, the other too much for motion. Both were rational adaptations to the house they grew in.

The Operative — Risk Analysis, and the Inner Saboteur Conquered. The two questions the Order asks of any venture, which most people cannot answer about anything they are currently doing. Inaction is a bet, and it is rarely priced. Asymmetry and reversibility as working tools. And the saboteur anatomised: pre-emptive failure so that failure is authored rather than suffered; anxiety masquerading as analysis — the tell being that real analysis terminates in a decision while anxiety loops; the manufacture of large dramatic risks to avoid small humiliating ones. With the Order's cure: the saboteur cannot survive being made to show its arithmetic. It is a creature of vagueness, and it dies in specificity.
